Dear Jennifer Tow;

I am also in contact with the woman with this issue.

The nitrous was suggested to deal with the physical pain of the shots of
novacaine and the mental aspects of the procedure. It probably also makes
the oral surgeon's job easier. Do you remember where you read about the
study of nitrous and children's brains? The woman is not using general
anesthesia for fear of a serious allergic reaction as the 2yo has many food
and substance allergies.

What is probably also influencing this is that this woman's first child had
the same problem and had 4 teeth extracted in a grueling but short
procedure. Plus don't they get 4 shots in their mouth, then the tooth is
broken with a hammar and then removed with a wrench? It might be tough to
convince her that the procedure is not painful.

By the way, I did happen upon the British protocol for nitrous use and found
no fasting time necessary as long as the nitrous is at 50% or lower. So
breastmilk right up to the procedure should be fine.

The woman was also looking for a study showing that nursing is helpful
immediately after the procedure to help stop the bleeding as the last time,
when they went to a major Boston hospital, nursing was not permitted for 30
minutes.
