I am looking for references or experince for the expected rate of growth
and use of fortifiers for breastfed babies with Downs syndrome. This baby
is three moths old, but just a few ounces above birth weight. The mother
breastfed and topped up and is now fully breastfeeding. She has tried
basically force feeding but the weight gain does not reflect her efforts.
Cardiologist finds no abmormalities. This baby was over nine pounds and
quite edematous at birth. She does not know what the lowest weight was.
Baby feeds q 2-3 hours and had at least one ac/pc weight of 90 gms.
Lawrence suggests that slower weight gain is to be expected with Downs
babies whether breast or bottle fed. The baby is quite active. The mother
is concerned about "force feeding." She has lots of milk and has tried
expressing before feeds to increase fat content of the milk. What rate of
gain is accepptable? How much does one push supplements is a baby who
otherwise appears healthy? References?
