Hi All,
I often wonder at american women being guilt prone. I mean, why wouldn't we
be? As someone (can't remember who, sorry!) pointed out earlier, If we stay
at home with our kids and don't work, we're bad moms for placing too much
importance on our kids not our careers, and if we work we're bad moms for not
staying home with our kids! We are "damned if we do, and damned if we don't"
!
I have people tell me I shouldn't work at home because I must be ignoring my
child when I am working. It would be better for him if I worked outside the
home and let someone else care for him! Ludicrous, huh?
As far as women feeling guilty about their kids reacting badly to allergens
in their breastmilk, I think it depends on the woman. My son was highly
allergic to the dairy in my diet, but I did not feel guilty about him getting
sick, I felt badly about it, but not guilty. How was I to know that he'd be
allergic?
On the other hand, my friends little girl was so allergic to dairy that she
had bloody diarrhea and ended up in the hospital. It was 2 months before
some Ped said that maybe she should try taking the dairy out of her diet to
see if it would make the baby less gassy. (they had done a colonoscopy on
the baby among other things to figure out why she had this bloody diarrhea).
So by shear accident, they discovered that baby was allergic. (BTW, baby is
also allergic to soy.) This mom feels so guilty about what her daughter went
thru. But, the truth of the matter is that she didn't know, and the people
who should have known didn't know. So she shouldn't feel guilty!
IMHO, guilt is a nasty thing that we feel we should feel when we aren't the
perfect mom/parent/child/friend/worker, etc...
A load of cr-p if you ask me!
