I work in a north american situation with breastfeeding initiation rates
into the 90s% and continuing over 60% at 6 months. I do not think our birth
experiences are unusual with lots of epidurals, c sections etc. We often
see infrequent stooling after the first few weeks, not associated with
fussiness. It is considered completely normal, assuming infant is gaining
well, stool is loose, and there are plenty of wet diapers. No intervention
is recommended other than being prepared to clean up when the child does
stool. Our postpartum support groups joke about it all the time. It is
like the sleep topic. Some infants sleep some don't, some infants stool
often, some stool infrequently and parents share tips both ways. Our
financially disadvantaged parents prefer the infrequent stooling infants as
it saves in diaper costs.
Several years ago the local pediatrician joked that both of us could earn
our fortunes if I referred all of the children I saw stooling less than
once a week to him and he referred all of the ones he saw to me!
Anecdotally, one of my three children stooled on a 10 day pattern from 2
mos to the initiation of solids. It would come out the neck of his sleeper
when he did go (usually at an inconvenient moment). It was not associated
with discomfort, allergies, medication, or my diet.
At a conference some years ago a pediatrician mentioned one child who had
had an extensive workup and proved to be healthy that stooled every 20
days. That put the once a week ones into perspective.
