I would like to repectfully disagree with the response to the Mayo clinic
interview on breastfeeding and guilt. I read this article and the rest of
the information articles from the Mayo cllinic. The general thrust of all
the articles is that breastfeeding is the preferred method of feeding and
breastmilk is the best food. The advice about asking for help, holding off on
pacifier use, avoiding formula when trying to get more milk for your baby,
feeding frequently etc is good information. The article on guilt is positive
about breastfeeding. How to assist mothers who for one reason ofr another
are unalbe to partically or fully breastfeed is challenging for all
lactation consultants. In private practice we see a wide variety of problems
and honestly there are even times when I am saying that guilt should have no
place in your decision about how you are going to feed your baby. The ideal
is to breastfeed right from the breast. But sometimes we are not looking at
ideal situations. Things like real (not percieved) inadequate supplies,
maternal illnesses, psychological issues, infant issues etc can interfere
with the ideal. I think we have to be careful about dismissing the Mayo
clinic who appears to be supportive of breasfeeding.
Guilt can be motivating or it can be paralyzing. It can add to the anxiety
of new mothers in general and diminish our message. When people feel
attacked they often turn us off. That in the long run may be a bigger
hinderence to the promotion of breastfeeding. Ann Anderson, BSN,IBCLC NJ
