To anyone interested in this thread:
In our hospital (and many others in Australia) mothers are asked to sign a
consent form for use of artificial formula. This states that we prefer not
to use it, and outlines some reasons why.
We also have them for nipple shields (rarely used ) and dummies/pacifiers,
even tho the mothers provide their own- we can't be sure she has made an
informed choice to use it, rather than the neighbour telling her it is a
great thing to have for a new baby!
We also do not provide formula, if the mother chooses to Artificially feed
her baby, she must bring in her own formula.
In the past, we have seen many mothers who have chosen to bottle feed, when
asked which formula, their reply was "I don't know, which one do you think
is the best"- so much for informed choice!
Best wishes
Susan in Australia
