I have learned a lot from this thread and I want to thank a couple
of people for being very helpful in this process.
Thank you Linda Smith for your explanation that it really doesnt
matter what goes inside the bottle, as far as the code is concerned, and so
all the great stuff medela had to say about providing breastmilk and "breast
to belly" didn't really change the issue, as even formula companies say
breast is best. As I understand it, the bottle being by itself on a piece
of paper or a website, being advertised to the public is what makes it fall
under the code.
Thank you Fleur Bickford for giving the site:
www.infactcanada.ca/Int_Code_TOC.htm to help me understand the code! This
really helped!
To Pat Young, Leslie Cree, Jenni James and Morgan Gallagher: all of
you stated in different ways how "breastmilk feeding" has become intertwined
to mean the same as breastfeeding, which we all know is not the same, but we
also all agree that having breastmilk in the bottle instead of formula is
best. So it seems that we are making strides in getting more breastmilk
into babies, that moms understand that "breastmilk is best" , and now need
to stress to moms that "breastfeeding" has benefits over "breastmilk
feeding".
I especially appreciated Jenni James statement how we really shouldnt
be compliant to have "breastmilk feeding" become the accepted norm, as I
absolutely had the thought of how the code was written in the 80's (I think)
and how maybe some things needed to be changed to reflect the changes in our
society. Wouldnt it be better to continue to push our government to provide
extended leave of absence from work for moms for the first year?! Or even 6
months? Absolutely!

The Code states that bottles and teats should not be marketed or
distributed in ways that may interfere with the protection and promotion of
breastfeeding. And that there should be no advertisement of : formula,
other milk products, foods and beverages that would replace breastfeeding,
feeding bottles and teats.

From what I gather: there should be NO advertisement to the public
about the bottle
If Medela wants to hand out a flier to
the health care system for educational purposes they can, but there are
guidelines to follow :
                                   (4.2) states the guidelines.
Which basically means, they need to add
a bit more to their paragraph as they didnt include the maternal nutrition
and preparation for and maintenance of breastfeedng, or the negative effect
on breastfeeding of introducing partial bottlefeeding, or the difficulty of
reversing the decision not to breastfeed, and the proper use of infant
formula, if not using breastmilk.

I am sure this all came about because Medela has a newly designed teat
to show and their bottles are polycarbonate- and- bisphonel- A Free, which
is a big deal right now in the US. But the bottom line is, they need to
change their advertisement to be Who Code compliant, or remove the
advertisement altogether, or be known as not being Who code compliant and
thus lose a lot of business from the LC population !

I am glad I understand all this now and am sure many have become
enlightened over all of this.
Thanks for teaching me!
