Thanks, Rachel.
I gave the family *exactly* the same information and am happy to have your
same analysis. The hospital wanted to give glucose only hours after the
birth, unbelievably it seems to be their protocole still. I was quite taken
aback, I thought breastfeeding support in Berlin would be up to date...The
parents first contacted me on June 20th to ask about the glucose. Like you,
I expressed surprise and explained why thi was no longer a common practice.
The baby is a week early, they did an ultrasound (I dont know why) & found
that the baby had the cord twisted around neck & feet so an emergency
c-section was performed; the couple was happy with the hospital delivery but
they have been very worried by the hospitals repeated attempts to give the
baby glucose and formula. They are both worried that the mum is notmaking
enough milk and that there is a breastfeeding problem. So I have reassured
them that everything seems just fine for the moment, and that they should be
seeing changes in milk production, demands to feed, weight gain, colour of
stools and urine. We've discussed hand expression and pumping and
establishing production, skin to skin care, cue feeding, breast compression
and just plain cuddling - they were looking for a LC to do follow-up once
they leave the hospital hence my post.

Thanks very much for taking the time to comment on this case, what a
wonderful place to exchange views, get support, meet other LCs!
