despite being a staunch Eastenders fan for many years)..



This expression *belt & braces* means doing more than is needed, just to be double sure it will work.

The *belt* is around the waist to hold a pair of trousers up
The *braces* are attached to the  (male) trousers waistband front & back, & go over the shoulders, also to hold the trousers up.
In reality a man would wear either a belt *or* braces, but not both, hence the expression.

Some other differences in our use of the English language.
Trousers (UK) = Pants (US)
Pants (either sex) (UK) = Panties/underpants (US)
Braces (UK) = Suspenders (US)
Suspenders (UK) = sexy female underwear to hold up stockings! (not mens socks)
We both use the word *braces*, in the orthodontic context!
Rubber (UK) = Eraser (US)
Male contraceptive sheath (+ many alternate names) (UK) = Rubber (US)

Feeding & baby related words (so as not to go too far off topic)
Breastfeeding (UK & US) = Nursing (US)
Nursing (UK) =working as a nurse
Teat (UK) = Artificial nipple (US)
Nipple (UK) = part of the breast, nothing to do with bottles!
Dummy (UK) = Comforter/soother/pacifier (US)
Mum (UK) = Mom (US)
Nappy (UK) = Diaper (US)

I'm sure there are loads more, & I've no idea about the rest of the world.
Any suggestions?
