Dear Wendy,
Since no one else has answered, I will take a stab at your
question: When I was going through chemo, those of us receiving treatment
were allowed to walk around the treatment room with our IVs, but we were
not allowed to leave the treatment room. This is because if anything
"happened" and an IV bag broke, it would have been classified as a
hazardous waste cleanup. (Not exactly a comforting thought while the
stuff is running into your veins....) Gloves that the nurses use must be
rated specially for chemo- I'm guessing that they are a tad thicker and
more protective. One of the nurses explained that it wouldn't eat through
your skin or anything, but you wouldn't want to come into contact with it
either. So it's not that there is any exposure to the drugs during
administration- just that there is always a potential risk, albeit small.
I imagine that it was a precautionary measure, perhaps imposed by the
facility. I can't imagine that there would be much of a problem
administering drugs as a bfeeding mother- everything is sealed up in IV
bags. Again, it would only be an issue if there was a spill, in which
case I don't imagine she would need to be the one to clean it up. This is
only a guess, coming from a patient, not a specialist. If anyone else
could shed some additional light, I'm sure it would be appreciated.
