Dear Friends:
I taught my first infant massage class last night. The class was composed
of 6 mothers and babies. Babies all around 6 weeks of age. The things that I
heard made me sad.
Such as the mother whose baby, gaining well, is nursing 5 minutes every
hour. The doctor's solution was to tell the mother to hold the baby off with
a pacifier for longer intervals and also to pump and give the baby a bottle
of EBM before bedtime so he would go longer intervals at night.
Another mother, whose baby has had the first of 3 open-heart surgeries,
has been told that she must pump and bottle feed so the doctor can know how
much he is getting. He is only about 1/2 pound over birthweight at 6 weeks of
age. He doesn't like to bottle feed. His mother can see that bottle feeding
is hard on him. So she "sneaks" (her word exactly) him onto the breast after
he bottle feeds. Do you all you think that this boy is loosing calories by
bottle feeding that he could conserve at the breast?
Now the dilemma.....I haven't been asked by any mother for breastfeeding
help. They all know that I am a LC,but they are in my class for the infant
massage training. Do I stick myself out and make suggestions? Warmly, Nikki
Lee
