I read your posts on education for day care providers, a day late and a
dollar short. I presented a session for daycare providers and it was very
poorly attended too. I think it almost has to be mandatory .We have
discussed including it in the nutrition work shops which providers must
attend if they get state subsidized meals. Some of the things I
included were the advantages to the provider. I said that just a few
years ago no one thought much about having a provider who was trained in
CPR now that is what parents look for. Parents are also looking for
someone who is knowledgable and supportive of breastfeeeding. I talked
about less smelly diapers, less spitup and that spit up and spills do not
stain. Less illnesss. And that it helped alleviate guilt in moms and that
made moms easier to work with on other care issues.( I know some of these
are superficial)) Then I talked about breastfeeding basics so they would
be knowledgable. I suggested a few books on the subject. And different
ways to be supportive and encouraging to moms. (Not he'll never live on
this thin stuff) And don't let baby be really uncomfortable but don't
feed him minutes before mom is expected either. I had some moms who had
sucessfully nursed past the first year while working, speak and talk
about reverse cycle feeding.
I thought about using a video that I believe was made by our state WIC
department. But it seemed to include too much about not letting the
breastfeeding mother disrupt the daycare,(having a separate entrance for
the mom so the other children wouldn't be showing of for her)
I was pleased with a little handout that WIC had printed out It said
"Congratulations You're planning to continue to breastfeed while
returning to work. This is a special gift you are giving your baby."
Would you mind teling me what you did ? What worked and what didn't.
Thanks
