illustration of the failure of our  health system to provide screened, banked
milk for those who need  it.



Dear Friends:
    While the stories of mothers organizing to provide  their milk for a baby
in need are sweet, they also alarm me.
    Informal milk sharing is no longer safe; HIV,  HTLV-1, and CMV and
possibly other viruses can be transmitted via human  milk.
    Can you imagine the impact on breastfeeding  promotion should one baby
contract a disease as a result of this practice? I can  visualize the US media
jumping on this and blowing it out of  proportion..............
