I'm sorry, I can't remember who had first posted about making a display
regarding unusual breastfeeding information. If I recall correctly, a supervisor
suggested it. I'd strongly encourage caution in doing a display like that.
While the person who suggested it may seem like a supporter to you, you may in
reality be dealing with a saboteur. If you post a display like that in a
medical setting (i.e. hospital, physician's office, WIC site) you risk allienating
many people. I think new parents would see that and realizing the
breastfeeding support/specialist made the display, would just decide you're "crazy".
Simply because it's "far out" information that they aren't ready for. It would
discredit any further info you give them. They may go on to tell friends
"You're not going to believe what the LC told me..." even though you never said it
to them.

Drs, CNMs, and RNs will see this and think the same thing. Again, you risk
losing the credibility you've worked so hard for. For years after that, they
may go on to tell their clients, "_______ has some good information, but she
also has some wacky ideas. So if you have any questions, or information from
her, run it by me." Who then, is the breastfeeding specialist? You will have
been usurped from then on.

I liken it to giving any breastfeeding information to new parents. While
we're working on correcting a breastfeeding difficulty, let's say sore nipples, I
don't suggest the idea of natural weaning. They aren't ready for it then.
They need assistance and encouragement then. However, when it's solved and
they ask how long they "should" breastfeed, I feel free to suggest they nurse as
long as mom and baby want. I might throw in the AAP and WHO statements.
Broadening perspectives is one thing - shock is another. Like I'd seen years ago
at an LLL state conference (under a picture of a camera) it states "too much
exposure leaves a negative image". I think the ideas shared are fun and
interesting here on Lactnet, but I wouldn't display it for the public. Best of luck
with whatever you decide. Sue
