Having had more than my fair share of experience with social workers and
bureaucrats I believe it! Glad that there was a good outcome for mother and
baby. It would be great to hear more from the NHS staff how they proceeded
with advocacy. I understand that this might not be possible because the
information might identify the professionals/unit (and child protection
people are very tight about privacy). I wonder though Morgan...now that you
have several of these cases in the UK (and we have a few here in Aust)
whether it might be possible to write a general paper about what lactation
professionals did that *worked.* I am sure that JHL would be interested in a
paper like this. At a recent conference I asked participants to indicate by
raising their hand whether they had had interaction with breastfeeding
mothers whose child had been removed by child protection looking for help.
There were a LOT who had.

Subject: [LACTNET] Thank you!

In April, I requested information and cites, to stop the removal of a 5
week premature newborn, from his mother's breast. As the baby had come
early, and the Social Workers wanted the baby put into foster care, from
the neo-natal unit, until the unit place that had been booked for the
due date, came open.

Couldn't make it up, could you?

Many of you responded fantastically, with long quotes and cites. I copy
and pasted them whole. The result was the advocacy statement I've just
posted on my blog:

html

Mother and baby were not separated. Mostly due to the sterling work by
the NHS midwives and lactation specialist, in the unit. But the work
and support of you wonderful people in here, helped them succeed.

Thank You!

It's rare, to be able to feedback, in under two years!

:-)
