(That heading could be taken more than one way!)
I have also seen the babies who won't suck on anything. Some nurse
is usually overly concerned that baby hasn't nursed, so tries to
force a bottle and lo and behold, baby won't take that either! I'm
so tempted to say "I told you so!". We need to learn to respect
when babies are telling us they aren't ready yet. Yes, we need to
be sure there is no medical reason for the lack of interest and if
there is risk of hypoglycemia, that needs to be monitored, but in
many, if not most, cases, if we are patient, they eventually
(usually by 24 hours of age and sometimes a little longer) figure
out that, "The free ride is over and they now have to work for their
food." (Parents get a kick out of that description.) If we have
force fed them in the meantime, then we have a whole new batch of
challenges to deal with.

When a bottle baby has trouble feeding initially, I have sometimes
asked, "Maybe you should you supplement it with the breast?" Some
never get the sarcasm!

Winnie
