At a LLLL conference years ago there was a round table discussion on this very topic. It was gently pointed out that the second child in this discussion is still a theoretical child who may or may not come into existence (secondary infertility, pregnancy loss, etc). The question is then asked (as Jan pointed out) how much do you want to sacrifice the health and relationship of the existing child who is already here for something that may or may not happen?

As for new research CCLI engages in a lot of work in this area as well. Heavily influence by religion, but the work on breastfeeding and fertility is generally quite good. Last I looked they were using an average return of menses at 13 months, but I would think that range would be more useful for this mother.
