I've had more than one "expert" say that breastfeeding when a child wants
comfort is problematic because it will lead to future "comfort eating" and
obesity. It seems to be those from the US who want to promote this. And
actually one of them was someone who is a real expert- Bruce Perry- a child
trauma expert= but he equated bottle feeding and breastfeeding (and in fact
had in his mind the non-relational giving a kid a bottle to walk around
with). I had a chat with him about it and he agreed that the relational
aspects of breastfeeding make it quite different from other sorts of eating-
he's on a speaking tour in Aust this year. I'd like to see if he's changed
what he says.
I can see this being more and more of an issue that people have with
breastfeeding with them thinking that we can't allow children to breastfeed
for comfort because it will lead to "comfort eating"
