Creams and ointments have different properties.
Ointments are messier, but provide better protectant properties, especially
if one is exposed to water.
Also, ointments are better suited for certain areas of the body.
Ointments and creams may have different drug release properties also.
In any case, if an ointment is not available, and only a cream is, I would
certainly use it as something is better than nothing.
I am not sure what the statement that creams separate from ointments means.
Ointments do stay on the body longer than creams so in certain environmental
conditions.
