First, I want to say that I'm truly happy that your friend received
care she was satisfied with, and that ultimately, the nursing
relationship between her and her baby was not severed by medical
irresponsibility.

Now, having said that, (and some of you knew this one was coming ....)
am I the only cranky lactivist who read this post and wondered why the
h*ll this surgeon could not have prescribed a nursing-friendly
antibiotic???? This mom had to pump and dump precious milk because he
couldn't have consulted Hale for 5 minutes? (And this is assuming
that the antibiotic in question WAS truly incompatible.) Perhaps I am
making a snap judgement, so please feel free to flame me if I am.

This kind of thing really gets my goat. And this woman is going to
glow about this surgeon who gave her such great care (though certainly
better than lousy care), when in fact it wasn't even according to best
standards. Reminds me of some of my doula clients who raved about
their OB's because the doc would "let" them eat in labor, "let" them
walk around and "allow" them to "try" and VBAC. Made me cranky
everytime.

I'm sick of giving doctors gold stars because they're breastfeeding
friendly, when we should simply ASSUME that a physician will apply
21st century research and standards to their care. Burning pictures
of the lousy ones in effigy in front of the hospital centers would be
rude, of course, though come to think of it, possibly effective. :) :)

But perhaps I'm a little too demanding .... *sigh*

fight even more morons)

Although the antibiotics were not compatible with breastfeeding, the
surgeon strongly discouraged my friend from weaning and suggested
pumping and dumping the milk and continued breastfeeding thereafter.
My friend has returned to this surgeon multiple times for follow-up
and yesterday she was cleared and will be able to resume breastfeeding
on both sides (!) in a couple of days when her antibiotic course is
completed. My friend sounds wonderful and she is so happy with the
outcome. What adifference knowledge and support can make!
