Jo-Anne,
Thanks for the very timely comments you wrote on Lactnet regarding respect
for choice. We all feel strongly about the importance of breastfeeding. We
all hate what is happening with birth and breastfeeding and health
care in general in our society. We see a decline in the quality of birth and
breastfeeding, and we
want to do something to help, sometimes anything at all. For that reason we
began to feel we can
tell the mother what to do and that will be the reason she steps out and
"goes against" her health
care providers. I like the idea that we assume a low self esteem for these
mothers. If something goes
wrong and there is a problem with the birth, the baby or the breastfeeding,
because they have followed
orders, the fault is not their own. If they had stepped out and done things
differently than their provider commanded, then if something goes wrong, the
fault is their own. Some women can't imagine that possibility
and feel much safer just going along. This frustrates those of us who are
more educated, but would be a very
difficult step for many women, this thinking and even moving outside the
box.
Ann Calandro, RNC, IBCLC
