I don't think it is a matter of "everting" the flat nipples. Really flat
nipples are just pretty much flat, and there isn't much you can do to make
them bigger and longer. Fortunately, it doesn't really matter, because (as
Jack Newman often says) it's "breastfeeding" not "nipplefeeding."

How is she trying to latch the baby on? Is she doing the very asymmetrical
latch, with the nipple pointed to baby's nose and using the breast tissue
below the nipple to rub the baby's mouth until baby opens wide, then
"folding" the nipple into the mouth? This will help the baby get a good
mouthful of breast and the nipple won't matter.

I would also question how well the baby really is doing with the shield, if
on day six the baby "still has brick dust urine and dry lips." I personally
find the shields not very helpful with flat nipples, because the nipple
doesn't come very far into the shield and so doesn't get much stimulation,
and the baby gets used to a large, firm nipple stuck in his mouth which is
not what he's ever going to get from the breast.
