Dear Colleagues,
A mother that I helped 2 and a half years ago contacted me the other day.
She is still happily nursing her toddler. She has been nursing with her
right breast only since her daughter was 6 months old. Her menses resumed
when her daughter was 2. She notices that with every period her left breast
is sore. Her right breast isn't. Her breast surgeon checked her and found
nothing to worry about. The breast clinic will not do a mammogram until she
weans even though she has not nursed on this breast for 2 years. Mother is
45 and used to have yearly mammograms. Mother can still squeeze drops of
milk out of the left breast. I am thinking that it is
normal hormonally caused tenderness, though why only on the one side, I
don't know. The mother never had tender breasts during her period when she
wasn't nursing. I tried to reassure the mother but told her that I would
double check. .
What do you all think? Is this something to be concerned about?
Thanks so much,
Chayn Fogelman IBCLC Israel
