There are tongue ties, and there are tongue ties. From what I have heard
in private conversations with Greg Notestine D.D.S., author of an early
JHL article on ankyloglossia, there are some large blood vessels that
must be carefully avoided, and this takes some in-depth knowledge of the
anatomy for some cases.

I'm sure there have been midwives and parents and others that got lucky
and avoided complications over the centuries. But in this day and age,
for medicolegal reasons, I would much rather spend my energy looking for
willing practitioners with appropriate credentials and supplying them
with the most authoritative literature available in order to develop a
referral network.

All we need is for one L.C. to sever a small artery, and not only is that
unfortunate baby and family impacted, but the whole L.C. profession! Just
my $.02 worth!
