Robyn, your reference to the relative & the jiggling dummy takes me back to
a horrible experience I had years ago at a Pre-School board end of year
get-together. One woman had her newborn 5th child with her and she was
breastfeeding. However, the baby had fed and so she was trying to convince
the baby to take the pacifier, which he didn't want. There was lots of advice
on how to get this baby to take the pacifier. The baby was fussing. I
remember suggesting to just nurse him again and then getting, before I knew
it into an over-my-head heated discussion re colic. I tried to explain that
if he was willing to nurse then it probably wasn't colic; I had experienced
2 colic babies and realized with my 2nd, who was my 3rd child, that my
high-need constantly nursing 2nd child had not been such a bad deal after
all (walking for hours is much harder than nursing for hours). Anyways I
was heatedly disagreed with and comments from doctors were thrown at me.
The worst part came when I was trying to walk the little mite, colic hold,
and someone else was trying to force the pacifier into his mouth while I
held him. I felt so awful for the baby.
