I think the term "yeast mastitis" is really misleading.
If the breast is red / hot / lumpy / etc we would say there is mastitis. ie.
there is inflammation.
When a woman complains of deep, shooting breast pain, we would think of a
thrush infection (OK, in the US you would say a yeast infection ;-))
I think it is extremely rare for a red, hot, painful breast to be caused by
a fungal infection.
What is not uncommon is that the woman has breast thrush, and we imagine
this may cause inflammation and swelling in the ducts, and this can lead to
blocked ducts and mastitis. So, it may start as a fungal infection, but turn
into a bacterial infection.
So, sometimes by treating the fungal infection, (as well as the bacterial
infection if necessary) we hope to reduce further episodes of mastitis.
Anyway, this is my understanding of this situation.
