In talking with new parents about "getting baby to sleep through the
night" I came up with another analogy. (I don't think I had heard it
elsewhere or read it here. If I did, I apologize for not giving
credit.)
"Baby has no concept of the difference between day and night any more
than he/she knows the difference between Monday and Friday." The vast
majority of parents don't expect their babies to know one day of the
week from another but many expect them to understand day vs night right
from the start!
While a few "night owls" can be coaxed to move their longer sleep
stretches to night by frequent daytime waking, most don't make the
switch until they realize for themselves that days are more interesting
and when all the "fun stuff" happens and nights are more boring.
I find that either or both these comments will often result in the
parents nidding and commenting that that makes sense to them.

Winnie
