I am working closely with a mother in the same position. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in her fifth month. She will be induced next week at 38 weeks. She has already begun chemo therapy. Her doctors originally timed the birth and subsequent treatments so that she would be able to nurse the baby for the first two weeks after the birth. She was just informed that she would have to have a bone scan before leaving the hospital after the birth and will have to stop breastfeeding for some time. She's been given conflicting information as to how long.
This mother is an extremely dedicated breastfeeder and attachment style parent. This will be her fourth baby. She is devastated by the fact that she will be unable to nurse her baby for long periods of time. Another LC is giving her a Lactina to use and she is looking for milk donors for the time that she will not be able to use her milk. Bottlefeeding and mothering without nursing are totally foreign to her.
I would greatly appreciate any information that I could pass on to her. Besides the breastfeeding issue and having her birth plan (at home, in water) ruined, she is taking things very well.
Thank you for your help,
Chayn Fogelman IBCLC Israel
