Hello! I am rejoining Lactnet after a 7 year hiatus. I recently
recertified through Karin Caldwell and Healthy Children. I live in
rural Wyoming and do diabetes education most of the time and lactation
part of the time. Happily, the pediatricians are referring more and
more moms. As a result of taking Karin's course last fall, the
Northeastern Wyoming Breastfeeding Coalition was formed to bring all
breastfeeding professionals in the area together. A coordinated and
organized group is a more effective group. I have started a
Breastfeeding Moms Meeting to provide after-hospital support and
encourage mom-to-mom interactions. I have a nice room set up and am
there Wednesday mornings from 9:30 to noon for drop-ins. I see a huge
need for a consultant in our hospital. While several of our nurses have
experience with breastfeeding, they aren't giving coordinated consistent
information to our new moms. But rural hospitals all over the country
struggle to provide the variety of services communities need within very
tight budgets. So, I plan to write a grant to fund a consultant for 1
year at our hospital. The goals will be to complete a needs assessment,
develop a job description, have the data to support a proposal to
hospital administration, and develop a model that might work in other
rural settings. I would love input from anyone who has done something
similar, has suggestions, or knows of foundations/organizations to apply
to.
