When I returned to the NYPD a few years ago, after depleting my Maternity
Leave, I was ordered to the firing range. With leaded bullets...and plenty
of publicity about the high lead levels all over our outdoor range. They
said, "go there or resign from the job."

I tried to find out more info on this very topic. The only info I could get
(from other concerned Police officers who had faced the same situation) was
the following:

Try to position your firing post upwind from everyone else taking the test.
Wash hands immediately after shooting with lots of soapy, hot water.
Follow other wise hygienic routines (i.e., don't rub your eyes with fingers,
bite your nails, etc.) See if you can skip the gun cleaning session
afterwards (or ask an instructor/collegue to prepare the gun).
Don't eat your "meal" at the range (many great reasons for this one).
Consider pumping and dumping the first nursing session afterwards.
Ask for a postponment if you are pregnant (our Dept. does this without a
problem).

Since I wasn't able to corner an expert quickly, or get a before/after lead
reading, I decided to take go ahead- and kept my job for a bit longer. Now,
I'm happily retired, and don't have to go to the Bronx range anymore...:}

I'll watch for any further info someone else may have on the subject.
