Dear all:

Mothers who have had a previous experience when no one told them that their storage capacity was
low (i.e. insufficient glandular tissue) may have developed a very negative reaction if they pumped
their brains out thinking they would get a full supply. If they had someone guiding them through
resetting their expectations that it may not be perfect and with the goal of dropping the pumping
when they got to an adequate sustainable supply are often much less traumatized by using the
pump.

I have found, like Heather, that mothers who have hypoplasia often benefit from early agressive
pumping to get the breasts producing optimally to their maximum capacity even if mom's goal is
feeding on the breast. If the supply is optimized early, mom then has a better chance of sustaining
feeding at the breast for a longer duration, especially if the thought of putting a tube on the breast is
a symbol to her of her breasts "failure" or she simply hates using the tube. If she is not told the
purpose of the pumping nor given adequate emotional support, she often will get incredibly
discouraged. I often set short term goals and say, let's do this agressively until xxx time and then we
will reassess the situation and relaxing and letting the supply be what it is.

Best, Susan.
