I had pretty low expectations for "Great Expectations: Baby Sleep
Guide," since it had sort of a "supermarket" cover design, and not
particularly well-known authors
http://www.amazon.com/Great-Expectations-Sleep-Guide-Solutions/dp/1402758154/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1311537033&sr=1-1
but I was pleasantly surprised, While not perfect, it offered
interesting discussions, with studies cited, on how a baby's rapidly
developing brain at various stages shapes the sleep patterns. A section
on "Where Should Baby Sleep" acknowledges all the mixed advice parents
are sorting through, and starts with "Bed Sharing: The World's Oldest
Sleeping Arrangement" with safety checklists. The section on SIDs lists
formula feeding as a risk factor. The newborn period includes "It Pays
to Respond Promptly" and through the whole book, while there's lots of
sympathy for tired parents, it also seems quite compassionate about
babies' needs. In the six-to-nine month section. "What is Sleep
Training? Does It Really Work?" overviews some of the systems out
there, consumer-reports style, and doesn't make any of them sound very
appealing, discusses the risks of extended crying, and suggests
Pantley's method as "option A" if someone really feels they need to take
action. The closing note of "A Distant Memory" encourages some perspective.

Anyway, I think the the book come across as reassuringly "mainstream"
yet has some thought-provoking, clearly explained information on baby
sleep. This is a huge topic for parents today.
