My son had hand-foot-mouth disease twice last year at 18 months and then again at 22 months, and nursing was the only way he'd drink anything and even that he did with great ambivalence (he even self-weaned from his evening bottle with the first bout). I did not develop any lesions on my breast, nor did his pediatrician suggest that was a real possibility. I'm not sure what the literature says about it -- it's usually caused by coxsackie virus. It appeared to be VERY painful for him so I was quite happy he was able to nurse enough to stay hydrated.

Good luck,
Sarah Reece-Stremtan M.D. (pediatric anesthesiology fellow in Washington DC)
