Good Morning Lactnet,

My question regards post discharge recommendations for breastmilk storage.
As in many NICUs our hospital policy dictates that breastmilk be stored fresh
no longer than 48 hours before being frozen. Ruth Lawrence sites a study
from 1987, Sosa and Barness that indicated that bacterial growth actually
decrease over 48 hours probably due to the bacterial inhibitory factors of the
milk itself.

Has any NICU that anyone is aware of recommended changing standard
storage recommendations for the NICU population going home because they
are "immuno-compromised"?

The challenge came from a nurse who had recently been "displaced" from a
discharge planning position back to a bedside nursing position. I am tending
to think that this arosed because "displacement" travels downhill...

Thanks all,
Kathy Amell IBCLC, RLC
