In The Netherlands most mothers spend the maternity days at home with a
trained carer for about 8 days. This woman looks after mom and baby, keeps
the household running and looks after visitors. Many people try and come in
those first days, thinking that that will not cause trouble for mom and child
because the carer is there. Ofcourse, in reality moms do get exhausted. Now
there is a tendency to include a note in the birth announcement cards that
there will be a baby reception or party in about 6 weeks to which they are
invited. Only close family will visit in the early days as they are
personally invited and all others visit the reception or party.
This seems to work quite well, although I do get an occacional case of a mom
with mastitis the day after the babyparty ...

Warmly greeting,

Gonneke
