Risks observed in various studies include increased frequency of <genetic
code
switching in human lymphocytes, free radical production (an origin of DNA
damage), disruption of myelination, increased absorption of drugs and
hormones, overheating of bone, increased rates of IUGR and immune
compromise.
One study showed a significant increase in CP in babies exposed to higher
levels of US. Another showed increased incidence of miscarriage. I have also
been told by one practitioner that U/S have been implicated in ear
infections
(damage to the bones of the inner ear as they are developing).>

Jennifer, could we please have some references for these assertions. As a
neonatal nurse for over 20 years I have never heard of most of these
dangers, but have found ultrasounds to be a very useful tool, especially in
at risk pregnancies. On countless occasions over the years they have aided
more optimal care and preparation. eg Babies with congenital heart defects
or diaphramatic hernias are delivered at tertiary centres and their outcome
is significantly improved. Babies with reverse doppler flows diagnosed on
ultrasound have their guts rested and IV fluids commenced, significantly
reducing their chances of getting necrotising enterocolitis. Babies with
renal abnormalities are picked up antenatally, enabling relevant profilactic
antiobiotic coverage and timely specialist referals before unnecessary extra
damage is done. Severely retarded intra-uterine growth babies are
identified and monitered closely so their delivery is optimally timed
balacing necessary development against sometimes imminent fetal demise.
Placenta praevia is diagnosed (or verified)so appropriate deliveries can be
arranged etc. etc. IMHO the benefits of ultrasound are significant and far
ranging and that is why they have become established as part of optimum
ante-natal care. Yes we all love to see natural, unmedicated, natural
vaginal deliveries but there are times when a safe delivery in an
appropriate tertiary centre leads to the optimal outcome for both mother and
baby.
