Having a job to put food on the table is very different from voluntarily
belonging to an organization. I would excuse anyone who works for a
non-Baby Friendly Hospital. After all, if all the people who are committed
to supporting breastfeeding refused to work in hospitals, there would be
very little chance that any more hospitals would become Baby-Friendly, and
lots of moms/babies who need breastfeeding help would not get it.

Unless you *had* to belong to an organization as part of your job, most of
our organizational affiliations are for net-working, information,
newsletters, etc. I turned down a plea to be on a panel for new Ph.D.s in
physical anthropology at next spring's Physical Anthro meetings because one
of the other panelists was the guy from Ross Labs who writes up the
breastfeeding statistics each year. He is a physical anthropologist, and a
member of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists, as I am. I
was supposed to talk about "networking" and he is doing a talk on writing up
resumes. Neither of us are talking about infant feeding or health. But do
I want to sit next to him, or even at the same table, where someone could
take our picture together?? No way. I also don't lecture at conferences
that accept infant formula company sponsorship money.
