Brenda, I am not sure what magnets can or cannot do. I have friends who have
magnetic beds who say they have gotten relief from a variety of ailments.
But I do know that mastitis does not necessitate the use of antibiotics. So,
the cure of mastitis without antibiotics would not mean that somehow the
magnets cured the mastitis.

If mothers would immediately get rest, apply heat and nurse frequently, most
mastitis cases would resolve within 24-48 hours. Antibiotics are the "big
gun" treatment and should be reserved for cases that do not show improvement.
This approach would help lower our cases of thrush/candida and help with the
problem of antibiotic resistance. Magnets may help resolve mastitis (in a
similiar manner to heat) but mothers need to be aware of the need for
frequent nursings and rest.

This is the season for mastitis/plugged ducts/weaning. Holidays add a high
level of fatigue for mothers--extra chores, etc. What we see is alot more
cases of mastitis, plugged ducts and weaning. Mothers become so busy they
delay feedings or are out shopping til they are dropping. Educating mothers
to be aware of this and make efforts to de-stress their holidays is important
at this time of the year. Valerie W. McClain, IBCLC
