Nancy said "Paula Meier's studies on test-weighing are much better studies
and show that test-weighing IS very accurate."
I have no doubt that test weighing can very accurately measure the volume of
an individual feed in a preterm baby. (Should this data be extrapolated to
healthy term babies?)
I am however more concerned about what test weighing cannot tell us. Test
weighing cannot tell us how much milk is available. It cannot tell us how
much milk an individual healthy baby, whose mother is experiencing
commonplace feeding difficulties, needs or whether the volume of milk taken
is adequate to meet those needs. A mother whose baby takes a large volume of
milk at a tested feed may still find that her baby wants another feed an
hour or less later. If she knows he just took say, 150cc, is she going to
be reluctant to offer another feed? Will she doubt the 'quality' of her milk
or its ability to satisfy her baby? Will she turn to one of the commercial
products that is promoted as the solution for 'hungry and sleepless' babies?
