Kris,
My favourite fact is that all that is needed for lactation is a baby willing
to suckle and breasts, no drugs, no special treatment etc are required and
this has meant that Grandmothers babysitting their grandchildren and using
the breast to comfort them have inadvertantly relactated. I like this
information because it shows the integrity of breastfeeding as a process ie
it works! A paper from Journal of Pediatrics 1956 49: 550-552 has a photo of
an African grandmother scooping up her breast and squirting the milk out
presumably because they wanted to show that it really really does happen (By
the way I have been trying to obtain a scanned copy of this photo but the
libraries I have spoken to won't accommodate me and scanning from a
photocopy just doesn't give a clear picture. If anyone ever uses this photo
in a presentation and has a scanned copy I would love to have a copy. It's a
great illustration of relactation)
Personally, I would stay away from male lactation because I think you would
find that it is so way out of people's comfort zone that they will not be
able to read or remember anything else.
