Can you tell the current thread really pushes my buttons? Positioning and
latch is as individual as fingerprints. I frequently tell parents when I
see they are really hung up on "getting it right" that if I were to line up
10 mothers and ask them all to nurse their babies in the cradle hold, we
would see 10 different positions and 10 different latches, but that each of
these positions/latches is RIGHT for each individual nursing couple. A few
months ago, a mom of a 4 month old who had been coming regularly to our
support group came in in tears. She said her husband made her come that day
because he was tired of her crying for the last 2 days. She had been to
her first LLL meeting and had been "yelled at" by the leader because she
was "nursing her baby all wrong". When she was telling this story, she was
actually nursing her baby. I looked at her baby (hands off!) and asked her
if it hurt. She said no. Was she comfortable? Yes. Was her baby gaining
weight? That got a laugh out of her - "Look at her!" I was seeing a plump
happy baby. My "advice" to her? If it ain't broke, don't fix it! The mom
seated on the other side of me laughed and said: "I like your style, Pam."
My particular style tends to be: Hands off. Minimal to no gadgetry.
