Dear Friends:

What is it about the 3-day Breastfeeding Management course? Why can't it be
the
1-Day or the 2-day Breastfeeding Management course? Why does the WHO see 3
days
as the right number of days of training for all healthcare staff working
with
pregnant or lactating women?

In the lovely free (can be downloaded from the WHO breastfeeding page )
"Evidence
for the ten steps to successful breastfeeding", Helen Armstrong is quoted as
describing "the stages in the process of change based upon her extensive
experience conducting courses. She found that resistance to the adoption of
adequate routines, due to a natural opposition to change and to personal
breastfeeding experience, often develops on the second or third day of
training.
Absorption of new ideas and active planning for change occurs more readily
after
that stage is passed."

So that's why I've encountered class meltdowns on Day 2. Sometimes I have
had to
stop teaching, sit down and let the class ventilate. Others have encountered
this resistance. Bobbi Philips from Boston Medical Center was very helpful
to me
when I wrote to her describing this event, and asking for support. She said
that
it was an important part of the process and sure enough, at the subsequent
class, people were amazingly open and interested.

warmly,
Nikki

PS/ The WHO also says that the classes must be compulsory and need to be
combined with strong breastfeeding policies to ensure change in hospital
practice.
