Dear Lactnet Friends:

Kathleen Bruce articulates a current problem. Public health mandates are a
reflection of current societal fears. Interesting that there were
prohibitions on sleeping with newborns in France a few hundred years ago.
Times were tough and folks were "overlying" and there were lots of infant
deaths; parents were really killing their children because times were so
tough, and calling it overlying.

Nowadays, we are in tough economic times and parents are being prohibited
from sleeping with their babies......interesting when history repeats.

I know a public health educator who feels stupid about teaching Safe Sleep.
She feels weak in front of a class because of the lack of evidence to
support preventive measures for a condition that can not be diagnosed or
treated.

We all need to be refusing to shut up about this important topic, asking
questions of officials, talking about it, and talking also about the things
that make sleeping in adult beds dangerous for babies: drugs, alcohol,
tobacco, obesity, overheating, and obesity/overweight. Someone excessively
exhausted from not sleeping would also fit that category, until they
themselves catch up on their own sleep.

I taught a class of 27 working mothers who asked me "when can I mother?"
...these women were in classes all day to get off welfare, and then
couldn't sleep with their babies. How do you mother when you are the adult
having the least contact with the baby?
