Hi all

Nikki's post got me thinking....

Maybe in THIS case, it IS appropriate to say that breastfeeding makes a
person smarter. Not necessarily smarter than the [implied norm] formula fed
baby, but just smarter than when he or she entered the world.

Does formula "subtract" IQ points? Or does breastfeeding "add" them?

I guess it largely depends on whether a newborn is born with a certain
"number of IQ points" or intellectual capacity. If they are, then
breastfeeding just develops what is there anyway and in a way that mother
nature intended. Formula would not allow that capacity to develop.

If a newborn is born with a certain potential, then breastfeeding COULD be
responsible for developing and maximizing that potential and formula could
prevent reaching that capacity.

In any case, it will likely be a VERY LONG TIME before we read the headline:
Formula makes babies dumber."

Subject: reaction to the "BF Babies are Smarter"

Dear Friends:

While I love the mention of exclusive breastfeeding in this article, the
language is still reflecting the notion that formula-fed babies are the
norm.

It isn't that breastfeeding makes a person smarter.......it's the lack of
breastfeeding that takes away the IQ points!

warmly,
