Hi Theresa,
Glad you liked my presentation (we had a lot of fun with that debate).
I just wanted to comment on the idea that breastfeeding is free. While it's
true that you don't have to pay to buy breastmilk (unlike formula) I don't
like to promote the idea that breastfeeding is free. The reason why I think
this way is because breastfeeding is actually quite costly for many women.
It takes time, lots of it. It is a costly thing for a mother to maintain
proximity to her baby or to arrange to express milk while they are
separated. It is also costly in terms of the mental and physical energy it
takes to learn how to breastfeed and to deal with others (in a culture that
is hostile to breastfeeding). I think that part of the difficulty that we
have in promoting breastfeeding is that there is the idea that breastfeeding
is free and natural and that it's something that women should be able to do
without any economic or social support....they should just do it. I would
rather promote the idea that women are doing something valuable in
breastfeeding, that it is important work and therefore worthy of support. It
is not cost free, it requires investment not just from mothers but also from
society. I would also like to promote the idea that without investment from
society in supporting women to breastfeed, many women are unable to
breastfeed and the consequences of this are way more costly than the
investment that would have been required to enable women to breastfeed.
It's another language thing.
