I, too, received the video and watched it. I found the info
intruiging. Of all the hand pumps available, I get the ravest reviews
from moms on that particular pump. It does seem to take less effort
than other manual pumps. One could operate it squeezing only one finger
at a time. However......
There was a recent post either here or on the HBLC group that talked
about the film. A doc was asking why not use the less expensive hand
pump, so the LC handed him one before rounds and asked him to keep
pumping it with his hand as they went on rounds. She frequently had to
remind him to "keep pumping or you won't 'get any milk'". This little
experiment really drove home the point. They may work as well as long
as you keep up the steady squeez/release. You could even use two at
once and get the benefit of bilateral pumping. However, it does seem
that a mom can sit back and relax more readily by simply holding the
flange/bottles in place than by having to constantly squeeze and relax
her hands.
Certainly, where access to electricity or cost are a factor, they can be
better than a lot of other choices avaelable out there. Two of the
Avents still costs less than the initial rental cost (kit, deposit and
first week rental comes to over $100.) Even if she has the kit from the
hospital, rent and deposit come to more than two of the Isis pumps.
Like I tell moms - The most efficeint pump is a nursing baby.
Everything else is an attempt to approximate the actions of the baby,
but still falls short. (Not unlike the way formula attempts to
approximate breastmilk but falls short (way short!))
