Anne,

Has anybody checked this baby's frenulum? This is exactly what I just went
through with my baby when he was born 7 weeks ago. He had a hard time
latching on at first, but then did fine for about 2 1/2 days, until the
milk started coming in. Then he started screaming and refusing to latch.
A cursory check of the frenulum was done by an LC at birth and said to be
fine. When I checked the frenulum myself at 6 weeks (after 6 weeks of
misery!) I found it was very short and attached almost to the tip of his
tongue - no wonder he had trouble latching! He did ok on a soft breast,
but when it was full he had a very hard time. I may be way off in your
case, but it's just a suggestion.
