Irvine, Cliff; Fitzpatrick, Mike; Robertson, Iain; and Woodhams, David. The
potential adverse effects of soybean phytoestrogens in infant feeding. New
Zealand Medical journal 25 May 1995, vol 108 (1000) p. 208-209. "we have
measured the levels of these compounds in several soy-based infant formulas
in NZ. The quantities recommended by manufacturers for infant feeding provide
an intake per KG body weight of approximately three to five times as much
daidzein and genistein than amounts which disrupt the menstrual cycle when
fed to premopausal women." The article concludes: "It would be prodent for
general sales of soy-formuals to be stopped."

Scary stuff. The authors make the parallel to DES and thalidomide use before
safety was established.

Linda Smith who was given this article by super-sleuth Marsha Walker.
