Hi All,
I have been trying to follow the Vit K thread for the past several days, and
must admit I am as confused as ever. The info all seems to contradict
itself. Am I really seeing these contradictions or is it my imagination?
This is an important topic of discussion for me right now. I am pregnant
with baby # 3 and would like to have as few things done to baby as possible
after birth. The items I question are the immediate Vit K injection (ouch!)
and the subsequent PKU (is it really accurate so soon after birth or better
to wait a week or two? My sources say wait.).
Is there any way to put the Vit K stuff in a format that is easier to
understand? Maybe a pro's/con's set-up, what we do know, what we don't know?
I keep hearing that BF babies get the Vit K they need from colostrom, but
then I hear that they need the Vit K anyway. And, heck, what did we do
before we had the Vit K shot in the first place? Did more babies die of the
hemorraghic(sp?) disease (still don't understand that one yet. My brain has
been on overload lately...only retains about 1/2 of what goes in :( ), or
did parents take extra special care of their newborns to prevent bleeding (ie
wait on circs {if done at all} till 8 days).
So many questions, so little time, trying to keep up with Lactnet is a job in
itself some days! At least it's a fun job!
Jay
