About BF in the '70's:

I breastfed my first baby in 1977, my second in '79, and don't remember any
particular problems with my decision. Nursery nurses were just as difficult at
that time as they are now, in that they were quite huffy about my insistance
on rooming in and no bottles. I was an extremely well-educated nursing Mom,
since I read everything I could read about breastfeeding, nutrition and natural
childbirth. Luckily, I had a doc who was willing to go along with my plan to
have an unmedicated birth. What was amazing was that my first child weighed 10
lbs 6 oz, my second 11 lbs 1 oz, and I escaped a C-section, even after pushing
for 3 hours the first time. Just the other day a nurse in the nursery called
me to tell me that we had to cup feed a baby, because it was a large baby, and
Mom just couldn't possibly provide enough milk for a baby that big. I told
her my story, and added that both my babies had gained a pound at their 2 week
checkup, and survived quite well on 6 months of exclusive breastfeeding, 1 year
with complementary feeding. I haven't heard any more about Moms being unable
to provide for their large babies. I think one difference in the '70's was
that I really don't remember as much overt advertising of formula companies in
the hospital and on television. I did receive a gift pack with formula in it,
but I threw that away as soon as I got home.
